‘Queen Fathima

This mural was a collaboration between Miles Toland and myself and celebrates our new friend and inspiration Fathima Dickerson. Fathima and her family run the last remaining soul food restaurant that has survived gentrification in Five Points called Welton Café. Fathima’s nickname is “Sunshine”, which is represented by the golden halo behind her and yellow blossoms. The text in the circle reads “Food for the Soul” and “Heart of Five Points.”  People go to Welton Cafe not only for their amazing food but for her smile and the love she shines on every person that walks through the door. She has built community through Welton Cafe. It has become a safe place, preserving the culture and familiarity that has mostly been pushed out by gentrification. She is a testament that activism comes in many forms, especially love. Fatima works non-stop not only running Welton Cafe but she is a community organizer and is getting her Masters as well.  Upon seeing the mural, she commented,  “It means a lot to see a full figured dark skin woman from this community celebrated, we need to see women like us represented!”
