‘Respect Reproductive Justice’

“Reproductive Justice” was created in collaboration with the ACLU while SB 10, a bill to remove an archaic abortion ban in NM, was being debated in the state legislature. I worked through cold weather, and even snow, to make sure it was completed before the bill was signed into law by Michelle Lujan Grisham. We were nervous but hoped that it would pass, and thankfully it did! This mural represents our progress as a state and that we respect Womxn of NM to have and make decisions about their own reproductive health. 1 in 4 women get an abortion in the US, when we criminalize abortion we criminalize our women. Which ensures that we never gain equity and grow into our full power within our communities. My friend Tatiana Garcia modeled for the mural. She is not only an advocate for reproductive justice but is working to become a doula. In her palm she cradles a blossom, illustrating how women should hold the power in their own hands to decide when and if to create life. The cactus flower is local to our land and resembles the resilience of New Mexican women and how we flourish despite circumstance.
